Bird Watching!

At Faire Child it’s no secret that we are big fans of the outdoors and experiencing all that nature has to offer. One outdoor activity that we are really fond of is bird watching. There are always birds to find! Even in the winter when many birds fly south, there are numerous ones that actually stick around such as the bald eagle and snowy owl making it a great activity regardless of the season. The best thing about birdwatching is that you don’t have to travel far to do it, it can be done right in your own backyard! If birdwatching peeks your interest, we have a few tips to help make this activity as enjoyable as possible!

  • If you live in the city, going to a park is a great place to birdwatch. If you don’t feel like traveling far, your balcony or deck will work as well.
  • If you live in a rural or suburban area, bring a blanket out to the yard and let the birdwatching begin.
  • Dress warm if the weather is cold. You are going to be spending time outside, you want to ensure you are dressed for the day.
  • Bring a book to help you identify any birds you see.
  • We recommend some binoculars or monoculars as well to help you see birds that are farther away.
  • If you plan on birdwatching for a while, bring some snacks so you don’t get hungry.
  • Bring a notepad to help you keep track of the birds you see.
  • Scrapbooking is a great way to make birdwatching even more fun. Print off some pictures of the most common birds in your area, put them in a scrapbook. You and your child can decorate it together and at the end of every birdwatching session, your child can check off any birds that they have seen.
